Inside of a minute to play, the emotions experienced by Downers Grove North’s and Hinsdale Central’s football couldn’t have hit two different extremes.
The Red Devils, looking to salt away 21-14 lead, watched Brandon Salter return a punt 89 yards for a touchdown with 42.5 seconds left to bring the Trojans within 21-20.
North (5-3 overall, 2-3 West Suburban Silver) was at the other end of the spectrum moments later as a 2-point attempt came up short as Andrew Pyle and a host of Red Devils met Salter on the option pitch to the right. North’s ensuing onside kick was recovered by Central (6-2, 3-2 WSS) and the Red Devils ran out the clock for a 21-20 victory that clinched a playoff berth.
