No. 11 Hinsdale Central captured the The Doings Cup traveling trophy for an unprecedented eighth year in a row Friday by defeating District 86 rival Hinsdale South 48-7 in Darien.
The Red Devils (3-2), who owned a 28-0 halftime lead, now lead the series 15-12.
Hinsdale Central senior quarterback John Whitelaw passed for 342 yards (15-for-24) and three TDs and rushed for two more. John Lyons was the biggest recipient, catching four passes for 147 yards with his first varsity TD, a 56-yard catch for a 21-0 lead.
Sophomore Tom Garvin, making his varsity debut, caught a 13-yard TD pass from Whitelaw and a 7-yard TD from backup quarterback Alex Hodakowski for the game¹s final score. Senior Alex Kirk (6 catches, 137 yards) and Whitelaw also connected for their ninth TD play of the season, a 73-yard pass play for a 41-7 lead with 24 seconds left in the third quarter.
Whitelaw scored the Red Devils¹ first two touchdowns on runs of 28 and 18 yards. Jake Knowles added a 1-yard TD run with 1:01 left in the second quarter.
Hinsdale South scored with 4:58 left in the third quarter on a 26-yard pass from quarterback Kevin Miller to Ryan Johnson (2 catches, 48 yards). Miller was 6-for-14 passing for 75 yards and rushed 15 times for 64 yards.
Hinsdale Central¹s defense limited the Hornets to 70 yards in the first half. Kolby Ourada and Billy Jacob had interceptions, and David Lutz broke up two passes and kicked six extra points.
Defensive leaders for Hinsdale South included Frank Jones (2 tackles for loss), Dane DeKing and Jon Gregoire (tackles for loss) and Devin Lee (pass breakup).
