#RedDevilsAlum: Spring Football Recap: Wide Receivers & Tight Ends

3 minute read

HAMILTON -- This is the latest of a series of recaps from Colgate Football's recent spring practice. Today's topics are the wide receiver and tight end positions.

Starters Returning: WR Thomas Ives (All-Patriot League Second Team), WR Owen Rockett, WR Tre Caine, TE Nick Martinsen.

Starters Lost: None.

Noteworthy: Nick Diaco also has made four careers starts at tight end and Owen Buscaglia one at wide receiver.

Coach Dan Hunt's Comments:

"The receiver position is deep; we have a lot of quality guys out there. Owen Buscaglia is looking like a guy who has played more than he has. He got some reps last year in game and really came through, and that gave him confidence coming into this spring.
"It was good to get Connor Wingenroth back out there. He hadn't played football in a while and we kind of forgot what we had in him. He made a bunch of big-time plays for us and he picked right up. I don't want to call him a pleasant surprise because he's been around for so long, but he did miss a year and it was good to see him out there. He's certainly a guy who is going to be all over the field.
"Thomas Ives is one of the top receivers in the conference if not the country. We've got Tre Caine, Owen Rockett and Nick Draught. Nick wasn't a high school receiver and he really came on this spring, so it takes a while. You could see it really start to click for him this spring as far as being able to find himself in space and run better routes.
"And we moved TySean Sizer over there. He made a couple of plays this spring that certainly made us feel we are on the right track moving him to wideout. He can make a small one a big one, he's got incredible hands and he can catch through contact. It's going to be fun watching him.
"That's a deep position.
"The tight end position, with Nick and Nick (Nick Martinsen and Nick Diaco) out there – we are in pretty good shape. And Michael Kane had a really good spring. He showed he's going to be a guy who can get himself into the mix next year, and that's exactly what we were looking for. Some years you are looking for starters and some years you want to see who's adding to the depth."
