Strike could force Hinsdale Central to open football season on road

Hinsdale, IL —
The Aug. 27 home opener for the Hinsdale Central High School
varsity football team could be played elsewhere if the
ongoing construction worker’s strike isn’t resolved soon,
officials say.
During tonight’s Hinsdale Township High school district 86
board meeting representatives from Henry Brothers
Construction told board members and about 15 audience
members installation of synthetic competition fields at
Hinsdale Central and Hinsdale South high schools may not be
complete in time for the start of the varsity football
season due to the strike, which began July 1.
“If the strike were to end tomorrow, I think we have enough
time to be ready for the (Hinsdale Central) home opener Aug.
27,” said Mike Concannon, general superintendent of the
project.
“But that also is dependent on the weather, and we have had
great weather lately. But if the strike isn’t resolved or
there are other weather-related delays, then probably not
for Hinsdale Central,” Concannon said.
Hinsdale Central is scheduled to host Wheaton-Warrenville
South in the Aug. 27 home opener, and also has home games
scheduled for Sept. 10, Sept. 24, Oct. 2 and Oct. 15. The
Oct. 2 game is the annual homecoming game, this year against
Oak Park-River Forest.
The project at Hinsdale South High School already is about
two weeks behind, so the probability that school’s
competition field will be ready in time for the 2010 varsity
home football season is not good, officials said.
“Tomorrow we will meet with our athletic department
officials and look at our options in case the fields are not
ready in time,” said Nicholas Wahl, District 86
superintendent.
Options include playing home games either at visitor sites
or at unspecified alternative sites, or play games at home
on practice fields, Wahl said.
Synthetic turf practice fields were installed at both sites
this spring.
“They are big enough to play games on, although our druthers
would be to have the games on our home competition fields,”
Wahl said.
“As of July 1 we were on schedule to complete the fields in
time, they were on schedule,” Wahl said.
