Hinsdale Central 12, Waubonsie Valley 10
Ryan Murphy’s two interceptions helped Hinsdale
Central win its first-round Class 8A playoff game 12-10 over
Waubonsie Valley on Friday night in Aurora.
Murphy’s second interception came with 1:22 to play in the game and
preserved the victory. His first pickoff was in the third quarter
near midfield.
Hinsdale Central (7-3) took a 12-7 lead to open the second half when
sophomore quarterback John Whitelaw scored on a 38-yard run on the
Red Devils’ first play from scrimmage.
Mitch Ewald’s 31-yard field goal for Waubonsie with 5:38 to go in
the third cut Hinsdale’s lead to 12-10.
Hinsdale stifled Waubonsie quarterback Tyler Castro, who had to
leave the game in the fourth quarter with a right leg injury.
With Castro out, Waubonsie put in 5-9, 150-pound backup Jeremy
Knight and then Chris Galovic, who was the victim of Murphy’s second
interception.
The Warriors (7-3), who entered the game with a six-game winning
streak, led 7-6 at halftime after capitalizing on a blocked punt.
Hinsdale Central punted with 7:13 remaining in the second quarter,
but Waubonsie Valley blocked it and Nate Lorance recovered at the
Hinsdale 6. It took the Warriors three plays to score, with Rich
Tronolone finally plowing in from a yard out.
Whitelaw got Hinsdale on the board first late in the first quarter.
He moved the Red Devils 62 yards in 17 plays, tossing a three-yard
pass to Davis Kalsbeek for the touchdown. After the kick failed,
Hinsdale Central led 6-0.
