Hinsdale Central was on the way to victory and
Glenbard West's hopes of a playoff berth were nearly dashed when a
pair of fast-acting defensive backs combined to change both teams'
fortunes in a wild finish.
As a result of plays from Chris Brewer and Bryant Venson, host
Glenbard West (5-4, 3-3) beat Hinsdale Central 15-13 Saturday in
Glen Ellyn and will prepare for Week 10 for the first time since
2003.
Hinsdale Central (6-3, 4-2) failed to share in the West Suburban
Silver championship.
Trailing by two, Hinsdale Central faced third-and-22 from its 34
with 1:51 remaining in the game when sophomore quarterback John
Whitelaw connected with receiver Davis Kalsbeck down the middle.
Brewer tackled Kalsbeck and stripped the ball at the 10. An alert
Vensen recovered at the four to end the Devils' threat.
"I outfought two players for the ball," Venson said. "We wanted it
more."
Whitelaw scored the game's first and last touchdowns on five- and
25-yard runs.
The Hilltoppers took a 15-7 lead on a 40-yard run by Kane Kiernan
(24 carries, 154 yards) after he scored on a one-yard run.
