Hinsdale Central quarterback John Whitelaw got
redemption Saturday night, but junior kicker David Lutz stole the
spotlight with his last-minute heroics.
Lutz's 25-yard field goal that bounced on and over the crossbar with
17.8 seconds remaining gave the Red Devils a 17-14 Class 8A
quarterfinal victory at Brother Rice. It helped erase the memory of
Whitelaw's late fumble in last year's second-round playoff loss to
the Crusaders.
"I knew I didn't get a great piece of it," Lutz said of his first
field goal of the year. "Usually that's a chip shot for me, but the
whole situation made me kind of nervous."
The victory earns the Red Devils (10-2) their third state semifinal
berth since 2002 and a home date with Mt. Carmel next weekend.
Whitelaw (25 carries, 155 yards) orchestrated a 14-play, 65-yard
drive that took more than seven minutes to get Lutz into range. He
and halfback Rick Zajeski (18 carries, 102 yards) converted four
third-down attempts on the drive, which left Brother Rice (9-3) only
enough time to position Sean Noble for a 55-yard field-goal try on
the game's final play. It came up well short.
"It came down to me fumbling last year, so I wanted revenge badly,"
Whitelaw said. "We could have been [driving down the field] the
whole game. It just took bearing down and making plays when we had
to."
Brother Rice broke a 7-7 halftime deadlock midway through the third
on freshman Martez Walker's 12-yard scamper. Hinsdale answered on
the next drive to forge another tie on Zajeski's second 3-yard
touchdown run.
