Whitelaw sparks Red Devils to win
October 31, 2008
BY TINA AKOURIS -- SUN-TIMES
Hinsdale Central quarterback John Whitelaw sparked the No. 16 Red
Devils to a 46-12 victory at Downers South in the first round of the
Class 8A playoffs Friday. Hinsdale Central (8-2) will play
Bolingbrook next weekend.
Whitelaw was 11 for 13 passing for 197 yards and two touchdowns, and
rushed for 98 yards and two touchdowns.
Whitelaw scored two touchdowns in the first quarter, on a 16-yard
run and then on a six-yard pass to Mick Culligan. Whitelaw threw
another touchdown pass late in the second quarter on an 18-yard toss
to Alex Krik. Whitelaw’s final score was a one-yard run in the
fourth quarter to give Hinsdale a 46-0 lead.
Hinsdale’s Eric Alexander picked up Reggie Miller’s fumble and
returned it 95 yards for Hinsdale’s first score early in the first
quarter.
“Eric took it to the house and it was awesome,” Whitelaw said. “From
then on I knew we were going to win. We had slowed down a little bit
in the last couple of games and we wanted to make a statement for
ourselves.”
Hinsdale sophomore Jake Knowles scored two touchdowns on one and two
yards.
Downers South’s defense had allowed only 80 points and notched four
shutouts while riding a seven-game winning streak. But the Mustangs’
defense uncharacteristically allowed 33 first-half points. An
opposing team had not scored that much since week two, when York
beat the Mustangs 32-24.
No. 25 Downers Grove South (7-3) scored two touchdowns in the final
1:57. Scottie Williams ran in from four yards out and Chandler
Whitmer threw a three-yard pass to Jason Jozaites.
