Hinsdale Central tops Proviso West
October 18, 2008

Three quarters of very good football by Proviso West will be enough
on most fall afternoons to post a victory.
That's not true, however, when the opposition is ranked among the
top 10 in Class 8A.
Hinsdale Central (7-1, 5-0) scored 26 points in the fourth quarter
on Saturday and left Hillside with a 53-29 win over Proviso West
(2-6, 0-6 ) in a West Suburban Conference Silver Division game.
The Red Devils may have been caught looking ahead to their WSC
Silver Division showdown in Week 9 against Glenbard West (8-0, 5-0).
"We played our best half of the year on offense, defense and special
teams,'' an obviously frustrated Proviso West coach Famous Hulbert
said after the game. "We have to learn to finish. If you had told me
before the game we would have 29 points at halftime, I would have
thought we would win.''
The Panthers were their own worst enemy in the final 13 minutes of
the game with three interceptions and a fumble. Proviso West also
had a huge letdown on defense in the fourth quarter, allowing the
Red Devils to move the chains when facing a second-and-29.
"Somebody had to make a play,'' Hulbert said."I was looking to make
a little history to be the first team around here to beat a
top-10-ranked team. We had them on the ropes for three quarters.''
The Panthers went ahead 29-27 with 9.6 seconds to play in the third
quarter on a 55-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Teddy Sloan to
Stephen Lockhart. The fourth-quarter assault by Hinsdale Central
started on a 27-yard TD run by quarterback John Whitelaw to go ahead
to stay at 33-29 with 8 minutes, 26 seconds to play. Jake Knowles (1
yard), Whitelaw (5 yards) and Eric Alexander (17 yards) added
fourth-quarter touchdowns for the Red Devils to break the game open.
