Hinsdale Central 42, York 20
October 11, 2008
BY BILL STONE -- THE DOINGS
Quarterback John Whitelaw passed for a single-game, school-record
five touchdowns, and junior Alex Kirk and senior Mick Culligan
scored four and two touchdowns, respectively, as Hinsdale Central
posted a 42-20 homecoming victory over York Saturday in West
Suburban Conference Silver Division action.
The Red Devils (6-1, 4-0 in Silver) remain tied for first in the
Silver with Glenbard West (7-0, 4-0), which beat Downers Grove North
35-0 Saturday in Glen Ellyn. The teams meet Friday, Oct. 24, in
Hinsdale.
Whitelaw, who completed 12 of 20 passes for 263 yards with two
interceptions, broke the record of four TDs in one game shared by
Brad Bower (2002), Dan Clarin (1999) and Mike Flynn (1969).The
record-breaking TD was a 44-yarder to Culligan that opened a 35-13
lead with 2 minutes, 9 seconds left in the third quarter.
Kirk (7 catches, 76 yards) caught TD passes of 2 yards on the team’s
first possession, 22 and 9 yards with the third perhaps the most
crucial one — finishing a 15-play, 80-yard scoring drive that
consumed 6 minutes, 54 seconds to start the second half and opened a
28-13 lead. Offensive tackle Collin Watkins kept the drive alive by
recovering a fumble at the 6 after a 4-yard run by Whitelaw.
York (4-3, 2-3) only trailed 21-13 at halftime and was coming off
Tom Roth returning an interception 37 yards for a TD just 1:00
before the break.
The Red Devils had pulled ahead 21-7 with two passing TDs in the
second quarter— a 22-yarder to Kirk and 97-yarder to Culligan (3
catches, 164 yards) on a slant play over the middle right after Dan
Johnston’s 49-yard punt went out of bounds and pinned the Red Devils
at the 3. It’s the longest TD pass play in Hinsdale Central history,
edging the 96-yarder from quarterback Brett Morse to receiver Scott
Hrubes in the 2004 playoff victory over Lyons Township.
Kirk had the Red Devils’ final TD on a 36-yard end-around run with
8:18 left. York’s John Gast added a 25-yard TD run with 2:47
remaining.
Hinsdale Central senior standout running back Rich Zajeski (10 TDs
on season) was injured on the Red Devils’ second play from
scrimmage. Zajeski watched the game from the sidelines on crutches
most of the afternoon.
Defensive standouts for the Red Devils included Garrett Kawa
(interception), Sean O’Grady, Kawa and Brendan Sullivan (fumble
recoveries), Mike Owens (sack), Mike Rogowski, Allan Cameron (tackle
for loss), Mike Rogers (quarterback hurry) and Brian Connor and Kawa
(pass breakup). O’Grady’s fumble recovery at the York 10 on the
second play from scrimmage set up the Red Devils’ first score.
York quarterback Tom Judge completed 9 of 19 passes for 158 yards
with one interception. Zach Preuss caught three passes for 109
yards, including a 69-yarder right before York’s first TD, a 9-yard
run by Lazerick Williams with 8:38 left in the first quarter for a
7-7 tie.
York defensive standouts included Kevin Kahovec and Roth
(interceptions), Tarrence Williams (2 fumble recoveries, 2 tackles
for loss, quarterback hurry), Bobby Golen (sack, 2 tackle for loss)
and Erik Westerberg (tackle for loss).
