Missing in action: The Doings Cup
September 25, 2008
by Bill Stone
The Hinsdale Central football team's 43-14 victory over Hinsdale
South Friday broke tradition and established another one.
For the first time in at least recent memory, The Doings Cup
traveling trophy was not presented to the winning team on the field.
When The Doings Cup was discovered missing from the sideline, a
last-minute attempt to bring it from the school was too late.
"I was disappointed, but the victory feels fine enough for me,"
Hinsdale Central senior Garrett Kawa said. "We got it last year so
we put it in a trophy case to show everyone and I guess we just
forgot to take it out or something."
The Red Devils were able to celebrate with The Doings Cup in the
locker room. Then the trophy received another journey for the second
year in a row -- with Hinsdale Central coach Mike DiMatteo for the
weekend.
"My boys insist on taking it home. They have a great time with it.
They were enthused to carry it to the car on the way home," DiMatteo
said. "We polish it up and put it in the dining room, and hopefully
we'll keep it a few more years."
