Hinsdale Central takes Doings Cup
September 19, 2008
By Bill Stone
The Hinsdale Central football team enjoyed a special victory, with
help of special teams that is, in beating rival Hinsdale South 43-14
Friday in Hinsdale in the annual meeting for The Doings Cup
traveling trophy.
The Red Devils (3-1) now own a 14-12 lead in The Doings Cup series
and have won the last seven meetings, the longest streak by either
school in the rivalry.
The only problem this time was that Hinsdale Central didn't get to
celebrate with The Doings Cup on the field because it was never
brought from the school's trophy case.
After Mike Rogowski returned a fumble 60 yards for a touchdown,
Hinsdale Central had opened a 43-0 lead with 6 minutes, 37 seconds
left in the third quarter and initiated a running clock by virtue of
a 40-point margin.
The Red Devils' Rich Zajeski also scored on a 74-yard punt return 20
seconds before halftime to open a 29-0 lead.
Mick Culligan then took the kickoff that opened the second half 86
yards to the 13 and scored on a 16-yard run three plays later.
The Red Devils took a 10-0 lead early in the second quarter on a
1-yard run by Eric Alexander five plays after Mike Owens' blocked
punt put the ball at the 24. Garrett Kawa earlier had kicked a
33-yard field goal set up by Brian Connor's 38-yard punt return to
the 21.
Also scoring in the second quarter were quarterback John Whitelaw on
a 6-yard run moments after his 27-yard TD run was nullified by a
holding penalty, and Zajeski on a 21-yard pass reception.
Hinsdale South (1-3) scored on an 8-yard pass from quarterback Rob
Christenson to Karl Ploger with 3:31 left and Darrin Kidd's 42-yard
run with 1:50 to go. Ploger's TD came right after Frank Jones'
39-yard interception return with a personal-foul penalty tacked on.
Whitelaw was 6-for-10 passing for 96 yards with Zajeski catching
three passes for 61 yards.
Hinsdale Central's defense held the Hornets to 42 yards and three
first downs in the first half and 190 total yards, 108 of them with
the running clock. Kidd rushed 16 times for 70 yards and Jonathan
Sterling had eight carries for 47 yards. The Hornets' Blake Leonette
also had an interception.
