Hinsdale Central Pigskin Preview
September 18, 2008
Hinsdale South (1-2) at Hinsdale Central (2-1)
• KICKOFF: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 19, at Dickinson Field, 55th and
Grant streets, Hinsdale
• LAST YEAR: Hinsdale Central 51, Hinsdale South 3
• OUTLOOK: In the annual battle for The Doings Cup traveling trophy,
the Red Devils took a 13-12 overall lead in the series with their
2007 victory. Last year also marked the Red Devils' sixth straight
victory over the Hornets, the longest streak by either team in the
series.
This season, the Red Devils have been impressive so far, following a
tough 28-27 overtime loss to Wheaton Warrenville South in the opener
with victories at Morton (50-14 Sept. 5) and Lyons Township (33-7
Friday).
Rich Zajeski, who has rushed for 377 yards and five TDs, continues
to progress each week, collecting 238 combined yards and three TDs
against LT. Quarterback John Whitelaw has rushed for 226 yards and
four TDs and is 33-for-59 passing for 414 yards with four TDs and
one interception.
David Banasiak (116 yards, 3 TDs) and Chris Kiser (111 yards) have
caught eight and seven passes, respectively, and returning starter
Davis Kalsbeek returned to the lineup Friday, catching two passes
for 40 yards.
Mick Culligan, who caught a 19-yard pass Friday, also has big-play
capabilities.
Nose tackle and third-year starter Pat Clegg (6-foot-1, 235 pounds)
is among the key players of a relatively inexperienced defense that
is quickly maturing.
Hinsdale South rebounded from back-to-back losses to Rolling Meadows
(41-28 after falling behind 34-0) and Proviso West (7-3) to beat
Leyden 21-20 in triple overtime by stopping the Eagles on a
two-point conversion to end the game.
The Hornets have lost eight of their 16 fumbles and been susceptible
to giving up big plays, including passes of 75, 45 and 18 yards and
a 28-yard run.
Speedy Devin Lee has emerged as Hinsdale South's featured running
back, gaining 154 yards on 29 yards highlighted by a 64-yard TD run
Friday. Juniors Cody Kuhlman (6-3, 250) and Dane DeKing (6-3, 285)
anchor both lines for the Hornets, while Rob Folkerts (6-2, 205) and
Antonio Williams (6-6, 210) are among six second-year starters on
defense.
• QUOTABLE: "It's always a concern when you play South because it's
a big rivalry game," Hinsdale Central coach Mike DiMatteo said.
"For them, it's one of the biggest games on their schedule, as it is
for us. It's for The Doings Cup for crying out loud. It's a big deal
for us and our guys are going to prepare accordingly."
